wallowing in my maple-filled bedroom

Will someone please tell me when maple furniture died a horrible death and was relegated to it's no-longer-in-fashion corner? Now, I'll be the first to say that maple furniture hasn't been my go-to wood for quite some time, but there was a time in my early post-college design days (not a time I'd like to relive) that maple was my design siren. It called to me from every corner of the store; I absolutely had to have it. So my first apartment, first rental home and parts of my first OMG-I-own-this-home, home were decorated with an abundance of maple furniture. Over the past couple years I've noticed that I don't really love it anymore, but I guess it wasn't until I embarked on the Davis Home Makeover of 2011 that I realized that no one (and by no one, I mean my personal design gurus) had maple furniture in their homes. They pretty much have anything but, which makes this self-appointed design guru (I'm still maintaining my amateur status) a sad, sad girl because my whole bedroom features a matchy match set from Crate and Barrel and my basement showcases a couple pieces from Oak Express.

Does this, gasp, make me out-of-style? I'm seriously this close to figuring out how to restain or paint the entire bedroom set. But we naturally used black accents throughout the entire room and I'm thinking the lovely black blocks we have above our bed will look silly once the bed is black. And what happens to all the lovely picture frames I picked out and have sitting on our faux pas furniture, or hanging on the wall. And white just doesn't fit our house or style at all. I need some serious design opinions, but while I start to gather photos to help can someone please talk me off the ledge?

  1. Here we go again! I don't recommend re-staining, its taken three weeks to do our bathroom vanity. I love the blocks above your bed, but agree they would look silly with black furniture. Maybe get a metal bed frame to add contrast?
